How to choose a supervisor for PhD studies?

April 19, 2018

A supervisor is one of the most important persons in your PhD journey as it is a mentor, who is supposed to lead and guide you through all years of your study and provide knowledge and emotional support. It is necessary to choose a good one at the beginning as you will be closely working with this person next 4-5 years. You need to have a good connection and be on the same page with this person.

It is necessary to choose a good one at the beginning as you will be closely working with this person next 4-5 years. You need to have a good connection and be on the same page with this person.

I would like to recommend a few strategies for choosing a supervisor:

  • check information about a potential candidate on the university’s website and pay special attention to the areas of expertise and a number and years of publications
  • look for her/his videos on the university’s website and YouTube
  • check academic and professional networks like: Google scholar, ResearchGate, Mendeley, Academia.edu, LinkedIn, etc.
  • look for personal website or blog
  • read her/his articles
  • write to his/her PhD students
  • write to a potential supervisor with a concrete proposal

It is better if you study is in line with current research of your supervisor as you will work on the same thing and there are higher chances to publish joined articles in the peer-reviewed journals while you are doing your PhD. A list of publications is a must requirement for a post-doc position in any country. However, there is a drawback in being a member of research team as you have less freedom in choosing research focus and methods.

One more thing, if you are not a native English speaker it would be better to choose a supervisor with whom a language of communication will be only English. It will help you to improve your vocabulary and knowledge in your field of research as well as ability to explain all your thoughts and ideas in English.

My last advice, don’t be afraid to change your supervisor! Things happen...

Quite often PhD researchers overcomplicate their studies as they are attempt to ‘save the world with their research’. As a result, it takes some years for them to complete PhD degree or not to finish at all. It is important to be realistic and remember that the purpose of PhD is to become an ‘independent researcher’ and not to change the whole world.
